USW Men’s 2nd 3 – 2 Cardiff Medics – 2/10/19

In a game not short of goals, USW seconds came out on top with a 3-2 win over the Cardiff Medics. All three of USW’s goals came in the first half with the young talent, King Junior, the standout of the game.
The Meds started brightly playing high press football which saw them have the first shot of the game just 44 seconds in. Although their positive start, it was short lived when USW’s number 9 Fredrick, scored the opener 7 minutes in after some good play down the right. They didn’t have to wait long for their second. King Junior found the back of the net in the 18th minute to put USW 2-0 up.
With 25 minutes gone USW were dominating play with both goal scores being the bright sparks of the game. USW looked a lot more comfortable on the ball and were in control. However, the Meds were given a lifeline after a goal keeping mistake in the 29th minute. The Medics Captain Harry Berbner didn’t waste any time in taking advantage with an easy tap in at the back post to make it 2-1.
USW were awarded a penalty in the 35th minute. The Meds might feel hard done by as seconds before being awarded the ball seemed to hit the arm of a USW player. However, was unseen by the ref which then led to the penalty after a tackle on Junior. USW’s number 10, Markus Holbakken, stepped up to take the penalty and scored to make it 3-1. Just 5 minutes later, Brebner found the back of the net for the Meds for the second time however was disallowed for offside. The half ended 3-1 to USW.
The Meds started the second half on the front foot. They hit the bar shortly followed by an incredible double save by the USW keeper to deny the Meds their second goal. The second goal did come in the 61st minute when Cai Evans hit the back of the net with what was arguably meant to be a cross. Nevertheless, the youngster pulled one back for the Meds.
The rest of the half saw the Meds push for the equaliser with added pressure coming from the forwards. Although now in control of the play, the Meds were unable to score with Gus Jackson seeing his effort come back off the outside of the post. The game ended 3-2 to USW, after a few failed attempts to find the back of the net by the Meds. Speaking to USW seconds coach James Mcilvenny after the game he seemed pleased with his sides performance whilst highlighting King Junior as their best player during the game. He seemed optimistic about his sides front three by saying “they will be the reason we go up this season”.
